Organization Name (Required - If you are an Oracle Partner, please provide the organization you are logging the idea on behalf of): Oracle

Description (Required):

Lets assume I have 100+ datasets on OAC(majority of them being CSV/XLSX as source) taking good amount of the storage space. Now I want to delete a DV Project which is no longer required. Upon deleting the project, the related datasets created in OAC are not deleted and it is left hanging there. I have to manually check which are the associated source files and delete the datasets before deleting the DV project. If I happen to delete the DV project first , there is no way to see which was the dataset used in the project. There could be so many unused datasets taking up storage space .

Also in case a dataset is used in multiple projects and the dataset has been deleted by mistake there is no way to find it out unless that related project is opened and there is a warning/error . What is the best way to clean up unwanted files without causing harm to existing live projects?

Is there a way to check if a particular dataset is being used in any project ?

Use Case and Business Need (Required):

Ease of maintaining files/datasets on OAC

Enhancement Request / Service Request:

Upon 'Inspect' on a dataset , a possibility of showing references or projects where the dataset is being used. Also limit this functionality to only users with 'BIServiceAdmin' role for better security.

We have some lineage in the new semantic modeler. We are looking in to options here. The API suggestion might be an option.

  • Great one. Dataset/workbook lineage is definitely required.

Definitely needed for being able to effectively maintain/administer OAC/OAS environment (governance requirement). Discussion could be, what is the best form of implementation of this requirement, my opinion is that this should be also part in planned API for DV (data sets/subject areas used by DV projects is simply just one of the "property" which should be available from this API).

Yes... This is need of hour.

    On behalf of NSAW customer:

    It is desirable to:

    1. Have the ability to change a dataset on a workbook (if the original dataset no longer exists).

    2. There needs to be an ability to switch a dataset on a workbook without opening it.

    * connecting a workbook to another dataset would help me switch between TEST data and PROD data.

    * a cross reference showing dependencies between datasets and workbooks would help me maintain a cleaner catalog.

Would "per object" be sufficient initially as in the original concept in the idea or would admins rather see something like the console Content Management UI we have for ownership assignment?

@Bret Grinslade - Oracle Analytics-Oracle Bret, lineage for dependencies between DV workbook and DV data sets/subject areas is fine, but it is just a visualization form of dependencies (thus a kind of supporting form). To be able to further analyze those dependencies, it should be primary available as part of Rest API (which has been just recently launched for cloud OAC, so far with very limited features) - this gives you flexibility of automation of "extracting" those dependencies. Having those dependencies in Content Mgmt console would be an option as well, but with possibility to export those depndencies into format for further analysis (CSV for example).

Dataset/workbook lineage is definitely required, let me know if anyone found out any way to figure it out.

  • Hello,

This is definitely a must have for so long …

This idea has been already posted in the previous years.

@Jean-Pierre Hoedenaeken Hi Jean-Pierre, for me it looks like that functionality (in DV, not for "classical", they are mature enough) around governance, DevOps, Dev2Prod deployments are not of a high priority for Analytics product mgmt/development. Although they are desperately needed and missing (I am trying to get attention within several Ideas/communication but without any success - as it looks like). But they don't "sell" product that much, so they are neglected (this is my perception). I have not seen any sign of improvement even in the latest product roadmap released recently. Good opportunity to attend tomorrow Oracle Analytics Cloud & Server: Product Roadmap Webinar and ask directly there (hopefully someone responsible for this area will attend this webinar : @Gabby Rubin-Oracle , @Alan Lee - Oracle-Oracle , @Bret Grinslade - Oracle Analytics-Oracle ).
