Allow users to organize data sets into folders/sub-folders

Organization Name

Oracle Corporation

Description

Managing data sets can be cumbersome when working with a single list on the Data Set tab of the Data Set page. Could we allow for data sets to be organized into folders and subfolders in order to make it easier to manage data sets that may have a relationship or a common purpose?

Could we also apply security (user/group/role) to each folder?

Use Case and Business Need

Large lists of data sets can be cumbersome to work with. Placing them in organized folders would simplify finding, securing, and archiving them.

Completelly agree with this idea. The best option would be, if data sets, connections (generally all DV objects) would leverage BI catalog for storing their definitions - this would be the best synergy between "governed" and "self-service" worlds within Oracle Analytics suite (so far the only object, which uses BI catalog , is DV project). From the administration and governence poitn of view, this would be (I assume) the best choice.

This helps not only with organizing data sets, but also with development. There are times we collect early and intermediate objects in a development initiative into a "junk" folder for future deletion. Folder strategies are well-understood. While we know that everyone is being encouraged to use key word tags and names for search and "findability", where we put things is also useful. Thanks!

I agree with this idea. This would be very helpful to keep things structured and organized.

  • I would like to see these folders as part of the catalog. Makes sense?

Along with this requirement. We should have automated ways without manual intervention to modify these data set underlying details like (hostname, ports, password) from development to production environments

Would like this Feature. Since It becomes hard to difficult to Manage things.
Wish If we could have this like list them as folder/Sub-folders structure and it can be switched back to list all files gets listed under one single page.

This is especially true when you deal with many users creating many data sets with similar names! Having the ability to organize data sets in folders + the ability to only show the data sets that users have access to (default is users see all data sets regardless of their access) would be very ideal!

I completely agree with this idea. This would also help to provide the folder wise access instead of data set wise.
